In 2017, I had the incredible opportunity to attend a transformative leadership conference led by the renowned John C. Maxwell. As a thought leader in the field, Maxwell has always inspired others to become better leaders, and one question he posed during the conference stuck with me: "Are you adding value to your people?"

This question is not just a matter of friendly inquiry; it is a call to action. Maxwell challenged us to consider whether we are being intentional and consistent in our efforts to uplift and empower those around us. Are we demonstrating a genuine belief in the potential of those we lead? This question resonated with me deeply, prompting insightful reflections on my personal leadership approach.

Adding value can manifest in countless forms. It’s not limited to those holding formal leadership titles. Many of us lead in various capacities, whether at work, in our communities, or within our families. Leading your children, supporting a friend, or mentoring a colleague are all significant ways we can make a difference.

So, are we actively looking for ways to add value to those we serve? It’s essential to pause and reflect on our actions and intentions.

Here are a few ways to ensure that you are adding value consistently and intentionally:

  1. Engage in Active Listening: Understanding the needs and aspirations of those around you is critical. Take time to listen and truly understand their perspectives.

  2. Offer Support and Encouragement: Sometimes, a simple word of encouragement can inspire someone to reach new heights. Be the person who believes in others, even when they doubt themselves.

  3. Commit to Personal Growth: The more you grow, the more you can equip others for success. Share your knowledge and experiences to illuminate their path.

  4. Lead by Example: Your actions speak volumes. Model the behavior you wish to see in others, promoting a culture of accountability and excellence.

  5. Celebrate Successes: Recognizing achievements, no matter how small, not only uplifts the individual but reinforces a team-centered mindset.

Leadership is about more than authority or title; it's about influence and the positive impact we can have on others. Whether in a formal role or in our everyday interactions, let’s strive to add value intentionally and consistently. By doing so, we reaffirm our belief in those we lead and cultivate an environment where everyone can flourish.

So, take a moment to reflect—are you adding value today?
